When talking about your relationship, how many times have you been met with some variation of the dismissive “long distance relationships never work” statement? I love direct people and those who want to protect you, but you also don’t need to agree with them. After all, they are FACTUALLY incorrect 🤓

1. “I know you’re trying to protect me, but right now what I need is your support” Acknowledge their good intentions and express how this person can better care for you. This can open up a beautiful conversation with them. If anyone has thought about the impacts of distance on you or your relationship, it’s you. You are not naive, you are brave and trying something out!

2. “I’m sorry you had a bad experience, do you want to talk about it?” + number 1. When someone is speaking from experience, we might tend to believe them more. They are still not in your shoes. No two relationships can be compared.

3. “What is your intention?” Sometimes people don’t realize the impact of their words and blurt out things without realizing that they may be making you doubt unnecessarily. This will help you engage in a much more thoughtful conversation.

4. “Can you repeat that?” Watch how the simple fact of needing to repeat a mean comment destabilizes the person and makes them the one in a position to justify.

5. “That’s not true, a lot of people close the distance” To that, they may say it is an exception. In which case you can include number 6. Ask the people around you, so many of their long-standing love stories started with them living in separate cities.

6. “Most relationships don’t work, does that mean you stop putting effort in yours?” This validates your situation as a proper relationship, highlights the fact that distance is only one factor, and reveals their flawed logic. Boom.

7. “Okay.” Like @saraschultingkranz said on the @liveboldlypodcast quoting her clearly amazing mother: “Assholes don’t deserve your energy.”
